Fraser Island 4WD
The wreck of the "Maheno" is the most well known of Fraser Island's many ship wrecks. The turbine-driven steamer had been decomissioned after a long and useful life and was being towed to Japan for scrap, when it was hit by a cyclonic storm and washed up on the beach, where it has remained ever since. You'll need a 4-wheel drive to get anywhere on Fraser Island, with Seventy-Five Mile Beach on the eastern side acting as a highway. There are various sand and dirt tracks linking the eastern and western sides and visiting the most popular lakes and rainforest areas.
