Mango Hill Farm
All the right ingredients for the perfect break
A working organic farm in the rolling green countryside not far from Caloundra has all the right ingredients for the perfect short break.
Mango Hill Farm offers some delightful accommodation with old world charm combined with a range of experiences that includes a cooking school, certified organic food treats like ginger enrobed in Belgian chocolate or dried mango made from the freshest ingredients, and a natural creek and wildlife corridor that blends with the peace and tranquillity of its beautiful gardens.
The certified organic farm, grows mangoes, ginger and turmeric on a commercial scale and has an impressive organic kitchen garden where they grow herbs and vegetables for guests and the cookery school. The farm also has a pair of gorgeous alpacas that live with the farm’s chooks and protect them from evil foxes. The alpacas take kindly to hand feeding especially snow peas - their favourite munchies.
The property is in Peachester, west of Beerwah and still close enough to the Glass House Mountains for visitors to Mango Hill Farm to walk to the closest of the mountains. Peachester is the northern end of the D’aguilar Ranges and is easily accessed from Brisbane and Caloundra.
Owner Elenne Ford, a Brisbane barrister, began her labour of love just after Christmas 2002 and turned the former mango farm into an organic farm business and haven for city and coast visitors. With help from an international chef and lots of Peachester locals the farm is now thriving.
The farm is not open to the public but offers group tours the chance to get up close with nature and enjoy the views of the Glass House Mountains followed by a delicious Devonshire tea and gourmet desserts before browsing through the shop for quality organic produce.
Visitors who want to soak up more of the Mango Hill Farm experience can stay either of the two properties on the farm. The fully renovated Dovecote Cottage is a 100-year-old Queenslander that accommodates four adults in two queen sized bedrooms, either in the Lavender Room or Rose Room. Both rooms are beautifully furnished in English country garden style, with low-allergy sheets, blankets and pillows. Dovecote Cottage has a full kitchen, lounge room, bathroom and laundry and wrap around shady verandahs just perfect for sitting and letting the day slip away.
The old farmhouse provides spacious accommodation in three separate wings and can accommodate up to six in two queen-size bedrooms and two single bedrooms. The farmhouse has great atmosphere inside and out with the deck area overlooking a creek where platypus live.
Guests staying at Mango Hill Farm don’t always have to fend for themselves in the kitchen. Instead they can organise for Oskar, a German chef with over 30 years experience in restaurants, to create a fine dinner and meal service without leaving the farm.
The property also has a large air-conditioned function centre available for conferences, corporate retreats, meetings or private functions.
